Casper Schutte

This sportsman from Potchefstroom has one of the most remarkable rehabilitation stories – a real inspiration to other amputees.

Derik lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident in February 2008. Four days after amputation he was admitted to the Muelmed Rehabilitation Hospital in Pretoria and after following the Icexpress post-op program: walked again on day thirteen!

Only 34 days after his amputation Derik was discharged from Muelmed Hospital and able to walk, as well as run,  without crutches. Shortly after, he joined his schoolmates on a rugby tour to Argentina.

Derik is a matriculant of Potchefstroom Gimnasium (2010) and a student at Potch University.

2010 March - Derik took the silver in all three his field events at the 2010 Nedbank National Championships in Port Elizabeth and threw a WBQ standard in the Javelin event with a distance of 36.01m. His distance in the Shot put event was 10.64m with a 28.08m in the Discus
2010 August – Achieves the QS in Discus (28.09m), Javelin (34.44m), and Shot put (10.16m) at the SASAPD-SASCOC Invitational at the University of Johannesburg
2010 September – Betters his QS distance in Javelin with a throw of 35.02m at the Pilditch Gauteng Trials and invited to attend the SASCOC/SASAPD Athletics Camp based on his performance
2010 October – At the UJ Gauteng Trails, Schutte achieves a new personal best in Javelin (36.36m)
November - honoured with a special award from the Mayor of Potchefstroom for his outstanding achievements in sport
2011 January - Bronze with a season’s best distance of 39.56m in Javelin at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand
2011 March – At the Nedbank National Championships in Rustenburg, Schutte took bronze with a distance of 28.54m in the Discus, gold with a distance of 37.89m in the Javelin, and another bronze with a distance of 10.30m in the Shot put
2011 August - Selected to participate in two international competitions in Germany. The Bayer Invitational saw Schutte achieve a fifth place in the Shot put event with a throw measuring 10.21m, and a third place in the Javelin final with a distance of 39.09 meters. He improved on both results with a 10.43m throw for fifth place in the Shot put, and a 40.17m in the Javelin for a fourth place at the German Athletics Championships for Disabled Athletes
2011 December – Schutte achieves 4th place in the Javelin with a throw of 40.17m at the IWAS World Games, and two 9th places in Shot Put (9.81m) & Discus (30.58m)
2012 Represented South Africa at the London Games and finished in 4th place in the Men’s F42 Javelin item
2013 Schutte dominated the men’s open F42 events at the 2013 Nedbank National Championships with a throw of 32.09m for gold in the discus, and an A-qualifying 47.12m in the javelin item for a second gold.

Selected to represent South Africa at the sixth IPC World Championships in Lyon, France.
